Uche's story - "My child has Special Educational Needs and because of No Recourse to Public Funds, he’s denied the support he needs at school"

My youngest child has a special educational needs. He’s got speech and language deficiency, and struggles with his attention span. But he's a great child. And while he was doing the speech and language therapy, I was told that because he's five now, they have to transfer him back to the school. So when we arrived at the school, I told them that he needs one-to-one support. But he’s not getting the support he needs.

Whenever he brings home back his homework, and I sit with him, he gets everything right. He can do it, when he has the right support. But when I turn my back, he start doing something else. He has his Education, Health and Care Plan (ECHP), but because of No Recourse to Public Funds, my child is being put in a group of six. I told the head of the school he needs one-to-one support. He needs that focus. He’s very capable under the right conditions, but without them he’s already falling behind.

The government needs to do more to let every child access the help they need to reach their full potential.
