Campaign action: message from migrant parents played across Westminster ahead of Child Poverty Strategy Deadline
This week we were in Westminster with a very important message for this Government – leave no child behind.
With a van and a loud speaker, we screened a video from migrant parents in front of the Home Office, Department for Education, and the Department for Work and Pensions – the Departments with the power to make change for migrant children living in poverty.
A huge 1 in 3 children living in deep poverty have parents who were born outside the UK. This is partly because hundreds of thousands of families experiencing poverty are locked out of vital state support because of a hostile immigration policy called ‘No Recourse to Public Funds’ (NRPF).
The Government has said repeatedly that it wants to protect every child from poverty. To do this, they must address the unique challenges facing migrant children.
With its Child Poverty Strategy due to be published in Spring, the Government has a unique opportunity to lift families living in vulnerable situations out of poverty and ensure all children can have the best start to life, no matter where they or their parents were born.
