In 1992 Praxis played a pivotal role in organising Kairos Europe – a five day ‘People’s Parliament’ held in Strasbourg which brought together more than 800 community group members from all over the world.

A contingent from Praxis joined the conference, highlighting the issues that migrants and refugees were facing in the UK, and the solutions they were fighting for. Through this platform, participants challenged a world order that was increasing and deepening inequalities across the world – including among migrant communities in Europe.

In the words of a participant from Eastern Germany: “It was amazing to see workers from East and West Europe, the Philippines, Latin America and Asia recognizing that they all shared something in common: that they are all victims of a very inhumane system. The solidarity which was established among them is unbelievable.”

The conference called for “children, sick people, those with disabilities, the homeless, asylum seekers and members of minorities, we all should have the same rights as everyone else; and where necessary receive additional protection and assistance.

After five days in Strasbourg we ask those in power: Are you blind, are you deaf, are you so cynical as to believe that the poor will remain silent? 800 people - children - women - men from all continents, from many peoples, cultures, languages have agreed at "Kairos Europa": We will continue to struggle and resist. We will create a new culture of solidarity and understanding. We will work for the renewal of democracy from the grassroots.”
