Dismantling the hostile environment: Four principles for a humane & compassionate immigration system
More than a decade has passed since the Government stepped up efforts to make this country a hostile and unwelcoming place for those of us who have migrated to the UK. The human toll of these choices, especially for women, people of colour and children, could not be clearer. Tens of thousands pushed into deep poverty, spiking rates of homelessness and an entire generation held back from reaching their full potential. The price of these policies is paid by all of us.
We want to see the next government reject the tired tactics of cruelty and hostility, and choose humanity and compassion instead. At its heart, this requires treating people like people. To help them out, here are four principles that a new government must keep in mind:
