Migrant Mothers’ Empowering Lullabies
Praxis group members are often engaged in an incredible range of activities: from campaigning for migrants rights to publishing poetry collections, their inspiration knows no end.
The members of our group for mothers WINGS have been incredibly prolific this year, and just before lockdown started they recorded their own lullabies for their children.
Through this project, the members of the group worked with Irene Taylor Trust and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra to put down in words and music the messages that they want their children to carry with themselves for the rest of their lives.
Messages of hope, love and confidence to remind their children and all listeners that love transcends borders and time.
The day WINGS members performed their lullabies at Praxis – back when we were always buzzing with people and group activities, we miss those days! – our building became a concert hall, with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and WINGS members filling the air with music, joy and hope for the future.
Irene Taylor Trust Artistic Director Sara Lee was there too, and she was particularly impressed by WINGS:
“They were, to a woman, excited, emotional, resolute, and hugely impressive.
Many of their children, aged 3 months and up, heard their mums sing to them and will now have these songs for ever.”
Their work hasn’t gone unnoticed. A WINGS member was recently featured on on BBC Proms, speaking about the experience of writing, recording and performing a lullaby for her son:
“My lullaby is about my son, how I feel about him, and some things he does that make me happy.
It’s a great feeling for a mum, and it made me feel like a really proud mother, I am so happy”
If you are looking for heart-warming, inspiring and smile-inducing music that can get you going throughout your day, WINGS lullabies are just here for you.
