Praxis celebrates Human Rights Day

Each year the Praxis community comes together to celebrate Human Rights Day. After another year of relentless hostility, the celebration is a much needed moment for joy, fun, and lightness for all.

The talented sisters Tasmia and Tasnia opened the event with powerful poetry and beautiful bollywood dancing. GIANTS then brought the energy with Tauy rocking the stage with his dance moves. Together, GIANTS spoke about the Recipes of Life project and the importance of cooking and sharing food for human rights and mental health. Brighter Futures performed poems from their poetry collection ‘Our Home, Our Rights!’ and performed ‘Stand Up’ from Harriet. Vive Columbia got us all dancing with a performance dedicated to the indigenous communities in Columbia. Next, reggae songwriter and singer Zeena Banks graced the stage and was an immediate smash hit with her electric energy. WINGs performed a musical-spoken word medley featuring the anti-apartheid anthem ‘Something Inside So Strong’. Finally, GIANTS member Carlton sang us off with ‘One Love’ by Bob Marley. We then shared a delicious meal together and enjoyed an exhibition of groups’ artwork and campaigns in the last few years.

This year’s celebration was particularly special as we mark 40 years of fighting for migrant rights. Olivia, Praxis campaigner and wonderful MC of the event, shared some words of wisdom that we're thinking about as we look towards the new year:

"Praxis has stood as a beacon of support during times of dire need. Our community has shown a tireless commitment to challenging the hostile environment, and to supporting each other through the complex challenges we face. If we want to have a better future – one where everyone is entitled to live and flourish - we need to create a unified front that transcends boundaries. Our response to the challenges we face calls for solidarity from every corner of society, from trade unions to faith groups, from educational institutions to individuals, to stand together in support of fundamental rights for all. Our strength lies in our unity, in our ability to stand firm against injustice and advocate for a world where dignity and rights are afforded to every individual, irrespective of their background or journey."

Thank you to all those who joined us, our incredible performers, and Union Chapel for hosting us.
